Tantalum aluminide is a metallic compound composed of aluminum and tantalum. It exhibits good electrical conductivity, with a density of 7.020 and a melting point of approximately 1400°C. Under normal conditions, tantalum aluminide is relatively safe for humans and the environment. It is typically prepared by reacting aluminum and tantalum powders through high-temperature sintering or melting processes.
There are two tantalum aluminides, TaAl3 and Ta3Al. They are stable, refractory and reflective, and have been proposed as mirror coatings for use in the IR.
