Chromium is a highly slightly dark gray metal. Ductile in the pure form, but in the impure form, chromium is hard and brittle. Its density is 7.20 g/cm³ and is soluble in concentrated alkaline solutions. Chromium has very good corrosion resistance; it oxidizes even in the red-hot state, slowly in air, and is insoluble in water. Chromium can be deposited on other metals to provide a protective coating. Chromium plating and diffusion treatment may coat substrates such as steel, copper, and aluminum with corrosion-resistant surface layers to achieve a shiny and beautiful surface.
