GRCop-42 is a novel copper alloy strengthened by chromium (Cr) and niobium (Nb). Unlike conventional copper alloys where strengthening elements dissolve uniformly into the matrix, Cr and Nb in GRCop-42 form stable Cr₂Nb intermetallic compounds. This unique microstructure provides several key advantages:
Exceptional Thermal Conductivity: The incorporation of Cr₂Nb maintains excellent thermal transport properties. Specifically, GRCop-42 achieves 85% of the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS) at room temperature, outperforming GRCop-84 (75% IACS). This enhanced heat dissipation capability makes it particularly suitable for high-temperature applications like rocket engine liners.
Significant Strength Enhancement: The Cr₂Nb precipitates effectively inhibit grain growth, maintaining a refined microstructure that improves overall strength. Furthermore, these intermetallic compounds strengthen the material through Orowan hardening mechanism by impeding dislocation movement.
Outstanding High-Temperature Stability: The superior thermal stability of the Cr₂Nb phase ensures reliable performance under extreme conditions. Even when exposed to severe thermal environments such as those in rocket engines, the alloy maintains its mechanical properties without significant degradation.
